  • Fly the Flag!

Flag BagOur friends at Ecsotype continue in their quest to bring us designer flair from downunder with this newly released extension to their exquisite collection! And when we say newly released we mean today, 17th December! How's that for hot off the press?

Flag is a collapsible utility bag that will say so much about its wearer and stands in a league apart from the various other utility bags currently available on the high street.

I was given a sneak preview and I loved it! Manufactured from high grade New Zealand leather, it is assembled from two flat panels and features a large internal cell with a smaller secondary pocket.

Flag can be worn off the shoulder or across the body, fully extended for maximum internal space, or folded in half for maximum portability. Now that's what I call a real utility bag!

    Flag Bag
Flag is not inexpensive but, as with so much in life, you get what you pay for and this bag is worth every penny, cent or euro!

It's so new that you won't find it in a shop near you just yet but its available online directly from Ecsotype.

  • The Fesscap Hat

FesscapTurkish designer Erdem Akan has merged Middle Eastern tradition with European and American style in his Turkish Reforms Collection.

His Fesscap caught our eye. Inspired by the traditional fez and combined with elements of the baseball cap, Fesscap aspires to becoming the "hat of the century", according to Erdem.

Handmade from a mixture of wool and felt, in addition to traditional red it is also available in black, white and purple. With the winter months now descending upon us we can see this stylish bit of headgear being a real winner.

  • Sabine Pound

Book BagWe love all things Ecsotype! Regular readers will recall that we recently featured Christian Pound. Reader interest in that article has been enormous so we thought that wife Sabine deserved a mention too!

On track to a career in art curatorship, French born Sabine changed course in 2004 to join husband Christian running the newly founded Ecso Group.

The move to creating objects has proven to be the right one for Sabine, who cherishes the thought that good ideas materialised into form can be shared and offered for years to come.

Her approach consists of striving to constantly outdo herself. Novelty is the filter through which she runs all new designs, and the justification for their existence.

We gave credit to Christian for the Presse bag but the truth is that they design as a team so here's something "from" Sabine, to balance the books!

Speaking of books....'Book' is a small leather bag with proportions that are roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

A central satchel is nestled in a harness and two handles provide different carrying options (over the shoulder or across the body).

Book Bag BlackThe bag is available in four different colours with all components being individually configurable, leaving room for hundreds of colour combinations. Bottom line is that you can create a bag to suit your style, suit your mood and be almost totally individual (what are the odds?).

Dig deep into your pockets, however, as this is not a bargain basement bag but, then again, whoever said that the best things in life are free hadn't encountered the designs of the dynamic duo that are Christian and Sabine Pound!

  • Hussein Chalayan at the Design Museum, London

AfterwardsFully established at the forefront of contemporary fashion design, the twice named “British Designer of the Year,” Hussein Chalayan, is renowned for his innovative use of materials, meticulous pattern cutting and progressive attitudes to new technology.

This exhibition, running from 21 January – 17 May 2009, will be the first comprehensive presentation of Hussein Chalayan’s work in the UK. Spanning fifteen years of experimental projects, the exhibition explores Chalayan's creative approach, his inspirations and the many themes which influence his work such as cultural identity, displacement and migration.

AirborneExhibits will include ‘Afterwards’ which explores the notion of ‘wearable, portable architecture’ in which furniture literally transforms itself into garments; ‘Airborne’ bringing the latest LED technology to fashion design with a spectacular dress consisting of Swarovski crystals and over 15,000 flickering LED lights, and ‘Readings’ a dress comprising of over 200 moving lasers presenting an extraordinary spectacle of light.

Presenting fashion as a site of exploration and as expressions of concepts, Hussein Chalayan challenges preconceived notions of what clothing can mean, rather than as garments with only functionality in mind. Motivated by ideas and disciplines not readily associated with fashion, Hussein Chalayan’s pioneering work crosses between architecture, design, philosophy, anthropology, science and technology.

Since 2003, Hussein Chalayan has also directed art projects, including the short films “Temporal Meditations”, “Place to Passage” and “Anaesthetics”. In 2005, he represented Turkey at the 51st Venice Biennale with Absent Presence, featuring Tilda Swinton.

Hussein Chalayan’s presentations demonstrate his unique ability to combine beautiful and wearable clothes for today with an intriguing vision of the future.

Hussein Chalayan is the creative director of PUMA, which acquired a majority stake in Chalayan's London-based fashion business and Hussein Chalayan brand in February 2008
